Kaptagat based rising star Maureen Chebor delivered a stunning performance to win the women’s 5000m final at the African Championships qualifiers held at Ulinzi Sports Complex on Thursday, booking her place on the continental stage.

Under calm, cloudy skies, anticipation filled the stadium as athletes lined up for the decisive 12 lap race. With qualification requiring a time under 16:18.00, the stakes were high.

Though relatively unknown to many in the crowd, the 21 year old Chebor stepped onto the track with quiet determination and a clear goal.

From the start gun, the pace was aggressive. Strong contenders Joyline Chepkemoi and Cynthia Chepkurui immediately asserted themselves, setting a demanding tempo. Chebor, however, remained composed in the early laps, running strategically just behind the leading pack.

As the race progressed past the halfway mark, Chebor began to make her move. Demonstrating tactical awareness and endurance, she smoothly joined the leaders, conserving energy for a decisive finish.

In the closing stages, her intent became evident. With a powerful surge, Chebor broke away to cross the finish line in an impressive 15:51.04, narrowly ahead of Chepkemoi, while Chepkurui secured third place. All three athletes earned qualification for the upcoming African Championships.

Speaking after the race, Chebor expressed gratitude and determination.

"First of all, I thank God for life and strength. It has been a good race. Now it means more work as I head to the African Championships. I have improved from competing at the junior level, and now I’m ready to represent at the senior stage. Going forward, I will focus on polishing areas of weakness for a strong performance."

This marks Chebor’s first qualification for the senior African Championships, following a successful appearance at the junior level last year.

Training in Kaptagat, a region renowned for producing world-class athletes, Chebor draws inspiration from elite runners such as Beatrice Chebet. Having already competed in high-level races across the globe, she is steadily building a reputation as one to watch.

With this breakthrough victory, Maureen Chebor has firmly announced her arrival on the senior stage and if this performance is anything to go by, her journey is only just beginning.
