Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has announced the disbursement of 43,978 bursary cheques to support learners across the city.
Of these, 2,640 beneficiaries from five wards have been transitioned to
Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) to improve efficiency and accountability in the
payments.
Delivering the Annual State of the County
Address at the Nairobi City County Assembly, Sakaja said education and child
welfare remain key priorities of his administration.
“The bursary programme is structured to ensure
that no deserving learner is left behind due to financial hardship,” Sakaja
said, noting that the gradual adoption of EFT marks the county’s move toward
digital public finance systems.
The Governor also highlighted the ongoing
expansion of the Dishi na County
school feeding programme, which provides daily meals to over 323,000 learners
in more than 230 early childhood development centres and public primary
schools.
The programme, implemented in partnership with private sector collaborators,
has reportedly improved attendance, classroom performance, and eased financial
pressures on families. Plans are underway to expand the initiative into
informal settlements with additional kitchens.
In addition to bursaries and school meals,
Sakaja outlined investments in education infrastructure, including classroom
construction, capitation grants for pre-primary learners, and distribution of
furniture to public schools, aimed at improving learning environments and
supporting vulnerable households amid rising living costs.
