Speaking during a tour of newly completed roads in Kilimani and Kileleshwa, the governor inspected recent works on Likoni Lane in Kilimani as well as Durham and Gichugu roads in Kileleshwa.
Sakaja said the upgrades form part of a ward-by-ward plan to restore Nairobi’s road network, noting that the effort targets all 85 wards and is meant to deliver practical improvements rather than temporary patches.
“For years, Nairobians have endured roads that were practically impassable. We are changing that. This work is happening in all 85 wards, and every sub-county will feel the impact,” he said.
He pointed to progress in Kilimani, including ongoing works along Argwings Kodhek Road, adding that remaining feeder roads in the area would be addressed in upcoming phases.
“Where we stand today used to be a nightmare for residents. Now it is passable, safer and more dignified. The few roads not done yet in this zone will be next — we are not leaving gaps,” he said.
Sakaja emphasised that road restoration is being undertaken citywide, covering neighbourhoods from Eastlands to Parklands, Lavington to Lang’ata, and Karen to Kasarani. He said the goal is to resolve long-standing road challenges once all 17 sub-county networks have been brought up to standard.
He also highlighted recently completed or ongoing works in Umoja, Fedha and Komarock, including improved drainage and pedestrian infrastructure, as well as the 5.4-kilometre Sh204 million Mihango Bypass, which is expected to ease congestion for thousands of commuters. Additional upgrades are underway in Zimmerman, Kabete, Thindigwa and Parklands along corridors such as General Mathenge Drive, Brookside Drive and 3rd Parklands Avenue.
Embakasi East and West remain some of the largest beneficiaries of the KSh 2.1 billion Nairobi Roads Upgrade Programme, with works completed or progressing on roads such as Umoja One SDA, Kwa Maji, Rockfield, Tena Police Post Access, Bypass–Mohango Link, Fedha–Tassia–Nyayo Road, Mohango–Kajuju, Kibiku–Muhuyu and Komarock access roads. In Eastleigh, reconstruction of long-problematic corridors including Hombe, Muinami and Quarry roads is restoring order in one of the city’s busiest commercial centres.
Upgrades are also in progress in Starehe, Dagoreti, Lavington and Roysambu, including improvements on Chai Road, Kombo Munyiri, Mweni Road, Jacaranda Avenue, Karandini, Hatheru and Garden Estate.
Sakaja further noted that the recently commissioned Borough Managers will be key in ensuring development projects respond to local needs and remain closely supervised.
“This is about bringing government closer to the people because Nairobi works best when every neighbourhood works,” he said.
