Section of Community Health Promoters yet to be paid months after programme inauguration

Under the UHC programme, the CHPs were supposed to be getting a monthly stipend which is to be jointly paid by the national and county governments alongside provision of health insurance cover to them.

However, months after the launch of the programme, a section of CHPs in Siaya County led by Eunice Oyuga of Malunga Dispensary in Gem Wagai sub-county have not yet received even a single cent.

She lamented that whereas their colleagues from other facilities were getting the stipends, the over 10 CHPs at that facility have received never even a single cent from the national government, and therefore appealed for the intervention of Siaya governor James Orengo to help the situation.

Similar sentiments have been echoed by her colleague Pamela Pambo who lamented that nobody has been willing to explain to them why others have been getting the stipend and that they don’t.

When contacted for comment, Siaya County’s Executive Committee member for Health Dr. Martin K’Onyango stated that he is aware that there are those who have not been receiving the stipend but assured them that the issue was being addressed.

He said that the payments are usually processed by the Ministry of Health in Nairobi and they had realized that those whose particulars were incorrect are the ones who have not been getting the payment, assuring however that the issue will be sorted as soon as possible.
