Bandari FC were held to a goalless draw by a resilient Kariobangi Sharks side today at Mbaraki Sports Club in Mombasa.
The visitors started the match brightly, with Ally Salum and
David Majak each finding themselves in promising positions early on, but both
failed to convert their chances as their efforts missed the target.
Bandari FC grew into the game late in the first half,
creating several opportunities but struggling to register a shot on target.
The first half ended scoreless, with both sides unable to
break the deadlock.
In the second half, Kariobangi Sharks intensified their
attacking play, forcing Bandari to rely on long balls. Substitute Alvin Ngoto
produced Bandari’s first shot on target with an acrobatic overhead kick after
connecting with an Amza Ndayou cross.
With five minutes remaining, Bandari missed a golden
opportunity to secure all three points when Clifford Otieno failed to connect
with a header from William Wadri’s cross.
Moments later, Sharks were awarded a free kick just outside
the penalty area after David Majak was fouled, but Ally Salum’s effort sailed
over the bar.
Speaking after the match, Bandari FC assistant coach Razak
Siwa blamed his team’s approach for the dropped points.
“Our players played well, but I think they approached the
match based on Sharks’ position in the league and our current form, and that
mindset didn’t work,” he said.
Kariobangi Sharks head coach William Muluya, on the other
hand, welcomed the away point.
“Bandari had the upper hand coming into this match after
beating Kakamega Homeboyz at home and Tusker away. Securing a point at the
start of the second leg is a positive result for us,” he remarked.
