Residents of Galilee area in Gatundu North, Kiambu County, were left in shock after a young woman  climbed a high-voltage transmission pylon in an apparent suicide attempt on Tuesday.

According to witnesses, the incident prompted a rapid response from Kenya Power officials and Kiambu County firefighters, who worked together to safely rescue the woman from the estimated 40-meter-tall pylon.

The woman, reported to be a university graduate, is said to have been battling depression, allegedly due to unemployment.

“We get educated, yet no jobs. Due to lack of employment, people get depressed. My friend had finished her studies but had no job,” the friend told reporters, urging the government to address the rising unemployment crisis affecting young graduates.

A parent who witnessed expressed deep concern over the growing mental health struggles among young people in the country.

“We are so shocked by what is happening in this country. Our children, no matter how well they have studied, are trying to commit suicide. This lady studied up to university level and had climbed nearly 40 meters up the pylon. The whole community called for assistance,” the parent said.

Residents have appealed to the government and Kenya Power to fence off the pylons in the area to prevent similar incidents in the future, especially involving individuals and children who may attempt suicide.

They also called for increased awareness and open conversation about mental health among young people.

“All I can tell the youth is that they should talk about depression or talk to someone so they can get help,” another resident said.
