Newly crowned Africa 5000m silver medallist Daniel Simiu is optimistic of making the cut in Kenya’s teams for World Championships and Commonwealth Games in the national trials set to kick off Friday at the Kasarani Stadium.

The men’s 5000m will start off the two-day event where Simiu will be up in the 12-lap race that has attracted 18 entries including four foreigners.

Simiu will be looking to make his debut in the two events having competed at the Tokyo Olympics last year in what was his first international event in Kenyan colours.

Buoyed by his medal exploits in Mauritius a fortnight ago, Simiu is ready for another battle with a deep field that has Nicholas Kimeli who has a world leading time of 12:46.33

“Of course I will be heading to the trials with a lot of confidence from my achievement in Mauritius where I bagged my first medal of my career. I know the trials will be competitive but I am praying for the best. My dream is to represent my country once again,” said Simiu.

With Kenya yet to win a gold medal in the men’s 5000m since 2005, Simiu believes the selected athletes will need to work as a team in order to bring the title home.

“The only way we can end the medal drought is through team work. Personally If I am lucky to make the cut then I will work with my teammates for the benefit of our country,” he said.

The trials will culminate in Athletics Kenya naming one team to represent the country in both events save for marathoners.
