Student accused of dousing acid on ex-girlfriend charged in Eldoret

Appearing before Eldoret Senior Magistrate Kyne Odhiambo, Tonny Kimwetich Kangor, 24 denied the charge.
The accused is said to have waylaid his former girlfriend Evaline Jelimo Sum, 23, as she walked from her rental house to the college to sit for her final examination. He the doused her with the deadly chemical substance on some parts of her body.
He committed the alleged offence on the morning of July 28, 2025 at SOS area in Kapsoya estate, some five kilometres away from Eldoret City, Uasin Gishu County.
The suspect is said to have been infuriated after his former girlfriend declined to renew their relationship after parting ways for some months.
On the fateful morning, the accused person is said to have waylaid the victim as she walked alone on foot enroute to RVTTI where they were both scheduled to sit for their final examination.
Kangor then called his girlfriend to stop so that they could sort out their differences but she instead refused saying that she was no longer interested in renewing their relationship.
This angered the accused person who removed the sulphuric acid from his jumper and splashed it in her head and neck before fleeing from the scene.
A fellow student who was riding on motorbike en route to the college came to her help and rushed her to St Luke’s hospital where she admitted for severe injuries.
Both students were pursuing a diploma in electrical engineering at the public institution.
The accused pleaded with the magistrate to grant him reasonable bond or cash bail promising to attend court sessions where required without failure.
The prosecution did not oppose an application by the accused person to be released on reasonable bond or cash bail.
The court directed that the suspect be freed on a bond of Ksh. 60,000 or cash bail of Ksh. 20,000.
The case is set for mention on February 9, 2026 for further direction.
