Supreme Court set to rule on teachers’ pay

The Supreme Court is on Monday expected to issue a ruling on the appeal by the Kenyan Government against teachers’ pay rise, which was awarded by the Industrial Court.

This comes against the backdrop of the Kenya Union of Post Primary Teachers (KUPPET) Secretary General Akelo Misori’s ultimatum that teachers will not resume classes come third term until they get the 50 to 60 per cent pay hike.

Misori said that the court had already awarded the teacher’s pay increment, adding that they would stand by that ruling.

He warned that nothing will change their stand and called on the government not to waste time by seeking sympathy through the Supreme Court.

The Secretary General asserted that they would not issue any strike notice when schools re-open, saying the government has an obligation to pay teachers.

TSC moved to the Supreme Court after the court to appeal upheld the decision by the Industrial Court to grant teachers a salary increment of between 50 to 60 per cent.
