Gor Mahia head coach Charles Akonnor has lauded his players following an impressive 2-1 victory over Shabana FC in a Kenya Premier League clash played on Saturday at Nyayo National Stadium.
Gor Mahia secured all three points courtesy of goals from
Jackson Dwang and Alpha Onyango, while Wickliffe Omondi netted a consolation
for Shabana in what turned out to be a fiercely contested encounter. The match
lived up to expectations, with both sides displaying intensity, tactical
discipline, and a strong competitive edge throughout the 90 minutes.
In a post-match day reflection with Citizen Digital, Akonnor expressed satisfaction with how his team
executed their strategy, highlighting their growing tactical awareness and
adaptability.
“Our boys have processed a lot of things very well. We are
very confident with how they play. Tactically, we were very smart. They are
getting better and better, and when an opponent comes with any style of play,
we are able to manage it. That is very good for the team,” said the former
Ghana international.
Akonnor also commended his squad for their composure under
pressure, particularly during key moments when Shabana threatened to turn the
game around.
“The opponents were really coming at us, and what was
important was how we coped with the pressure. They have done very well, and we
are very pleased with how we played this match and won it.”
The victory had significant implications in the title race.
Gor Mahia briefly opened a 10-point lead at the top of the table over their
arch-rivals AFC Leopards, before Ingwe reduced the gap to seven points
following their narrow 1-0 win over Tusker FC.
K’Ogalo now sit comfortably at the summit with 56 points
from 25 matches, having registered 17 wins, five draws, and only three defeats.
Their dominance is further reflected in their statistics — they boast the best
defensive record in the league, conceding just 18 goals, while also leading in
attack with 44 goals scored.
For Shabana, the defeat marked their seventh loss of the
campaign, dropping them to fourth place in the standings. The ‘Glamour Boys’
have managed 11 wins and seven draws so far and will need a quick response to
stay in contention for a top-three finish.
With momentum firmly on their side, Gor Mahia look
increasingly on course for another league title, while Shabana face a crucial
period as the season heads into its final stretch.
