This year's theme, "Punda Poa, Kazi Poa," underscores the importance of good donkey welfare for effective task performance.
To mark this occasion, The Donkey Sanctuary Kenya organized a special event in the village of Manda-Maweni on Manda Island, part of the Lamu Archipelago.
This village is home to approximately 120 donkeys, which play a vital role in the local community by transporting heavy coral stone and ballast from nearby quarries to the seaport. Additionally, they assist in fetching water and carrying essential household goods from the shore to inland villages.
However, the labour performed by Manda-Maweni's donkeys exposes them to various welfare issues such as sores from inadequate harnessing, cart-related injuries, and lameness.
In response, The Donkey Sanctuary Kenya, in collaboration with the County Government of Lamu, provided comprehensive health checks and treatments to donkeys in need during the event. They also distributed nutritious feed to ensure the well-being and vitality of these animals.
Furthermore, The Donkey Sanctuary partnered with the Lamu Art and Theatre Alliance (LATA) to present an interactive drama piece to the residents of Manda. This engaging performance aimed to foster understanding of donkeys as sentient beings capable of experiencing a range of emotions.
Research suggests that owners who recognize this sentience are more likely to prioritize the welfare of their donkeys.
The drama, developed collaboratively by LATA and researchers from the University of Portsmouth, incorporated insights from local donkey owners. It was the first time the performance was showcased in Manda after its successful debut on Lamu Island.
Audiences experienced an entertaining yet impactful medium of theatre, promoting the intrinsic value of donkeys and advocating for their well-being.
Dr. Solomon Onyango, the Country Director for The Donkey Sanctuary Kenya, emphasized the importance of protecting and cherishing these noble animals as part of celebrating World Donkey Day.
The Donkey Sanctuary is an international animal welfare charity dedicated to improving the lives of donkeys and mules worldwide.
With a presence in Kenya since 1987, their mission remains focused on enhancing donkey welfare to support the livelihoods of millions who depend on these animals daily.
