The Tourism Regulatory Authority (TRA) has launched a nationwide safety and security sensitisation programme aimed at strengthening preparedness across Kenya’s tourism sector and enhancing confidence among travellers.

The programme, being implemented in collaboration with key security agencies including the Tourist Police Unit, Anti-Terrorism Police Unit (ATPU), Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and the Bomb Disposal Unit, seeks to equip tourism industry players with practical skills to prevent, detect and respond to emerging security threats.

Speaking during the sensitisation forums, TRA Director General Norbert Talam underscored the importance of safety and security as a cornerstone of a thriving tourism industry.

He noted that a secure environment is critical in building trust among both domestic and international tourists, which in turn supports sustained sector growth.

Talam urged stakeholders across the tourism value chain to strengthen compliance with safety standards highlighted during the training sessions.

He reaffirmed the Authority’s commitment to working closely with partner agencies to expand the programme across the country, ensuring more industry players are reached.

He further revealed that the next phase of the initiative will target tour driver guides, tour operators and travel agencies.

The expanded training is expected to deepen preparedness and contribute to building a more resilient and secure tourism ecosystem.

Industry players have welcomed the programme, citing its relevance in addressing evolving security challenges.

Kibet Tembur, General Manager of Starling Bird Resort, said the sensitisation forums offer critical knowledge that can help improve safety standards within the sector.

He called on TRA to conduct the trainings more frequently to ensure stakeholders remain updated and well-prepared.

The involvement of specialised security units is expected to provide technical expertise and practical insights, fostering a coordinated approach to safety across tourism touchpoints.

This comes at a crucial time as the sector prepares for the upcoming facility classification exercise, which is expected to further raise standards and competitiveness.
