Two people were lynched by a mob at the Kibuye area in Kisumu on Sunday morning following allegations of mugging and killing a woman on Saturday night.

The Patels Kondele highway was a battlefield as police lobbed teargas canisters to disperse an irate mob that had lynched a middle-aged man at the main entrance of the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital.

It is alleged that the man had confessed to murdering a businesswoman on Saturday night and ran into the hospital to escape the wrath of the mob.

“The culprit entered our emergency area where he was caught by the mob who were in pursuit. They overpowered our security team who pleaded with them not to kill the person within the hospital, but then they carried the said culprit and killed him outside the gate,” said one of the hospital staff.

The mob then made its way to Kibuye market, where a second suspect was lynched on allegations of being part of the gang that has been reigning terror in the recent past.

Boda boda riders accused the gang of using motorbikes that bear no registration plates, tainting the name of genuine riders in the sector.

The residents further accused security agencies of laxity, vowing to initiate a citizen-led crackdown to smoke out criminal elements within the boda boda transport sub-sector.

The two bodies have been moved to the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga morgue.
