A sombre mood engulfed Ggaba Early Childhood Development Program school in Kampala, Uganda, on Thursday, after a man stabbed and killed four children.

Reports indicated that the man gained access to the daycare centre under the guise of a parent, where he briefly engaged the administrator in charge.

Thereafter, he is reported to have locked the gate, brandished his weapon and began stabbing any child that he came across.

Teachers at the daycare centre raised the alarm, prompting the suspect to stage an escape. His efforts were, however, curtailed by a security guard from the nearby Ggaba Community Church.

Angry residents later surrounded the suspect, baying for his blood over the tragic incident. Police officers, who were quickly dispatched to the scene, opened fire into the air to disperse the crowd.

Following his arrest, the suspect was bundled into a police truck and taken into custody.

Uganda's Police Inspector General Abas Byakagaba appealed to the public to remain calm as police commence investigations over the matter.

"We call upon anyone with information about the suspect to give to the police to aid in investigations," Byakagaba told Uganda's press.
