The United Nations Office at Nairobi on Monday hosted vibrant celebrations to mark Chinese Language Day turning the spotlight on how language and culture are opening new doors for Kenyans.

From calligraphy brushes to cultural showcases, the event was not just about language, but opportunity especially for young people seeking careers in diplomacy, business, and technology.

Speaking at the event, UN Under-Secretary-General and Director-General of UNON Zainab Hawa Bangura emphasized that multilingualism is key to unlocking global opportunities.

“Language is not just communication it is a bridge to cooperation, understanding, and shared progress,” she said.

For many Kenyan students and professionals, learning Chinese is increasingly becoming a valuable skill. With growing Kenya-China ties in trade, infrastructure, and education, the language is fast emerging as a gateway to jobs and international exposure.

Chinese Ambassador to Kenya Guo Haiyan highlighted the rising number of young Africans embracing Chinese, noting that cultural exchange programs are helping build stronger people-to-people connections.

At the same time, Nairobi’s position as the only UN headquarters in the Global South continues to place Kenya at the center of global diplomacy making such cultural events even more significant.

Participants at the event also got hands on experience with Chinese calligraphy, symbolizing not just artistic expression, but the blending of cultures right here in Kenya.
