World silver medalist Emmanuel Wanyonyi held off a strong field to punch a ticket to the men’s 800m Olympics final clocking 1:43.32 to win his semifinal, and will now bear all the weight of Kenya’s expectations to guard the two-lap race dominion on Saturday.

Wanyonyi’s teammate Wycliffe Kinyamal finished third in 1:45.29 in the second semi-final to miss out on the final as reigning world champion Marco Arop of Canada eased through in 1:45.05 to set up a potentially explosive encounter with Wanyonyi.

Youngster Wanyonyi took no chances in the final lap producing a final straight sprint to outpace surging Bryce Hoppel from the USA.

The heat also produced the other two fastest athletes who placed outside the top two with Max Burgin of Great Britain and Mohamed Attaoui of Spain benefiting from the blistering pace set by Wanyonyi.

Also advancing to the final was Djamel Sedjati from Algeria who clocked an impressive time of 1:45.08 to win the first heat ahead of Botswana’s Tshepiso Masalela who came in 1:45.33.
