The Committee on Senior Counsel reached the decision following a competitive vetting process, conducted after a national call for applications issued on September 2, 2025, under the Advocates (Senior Counsel Conferment and Privileges) Rules, 2011 (Revised 2017). A total of 105 advocates applied for the coveted title.
Chaired by Senior Counsel Philip Murgor, the Committee comprises senior members drawn from the Bar, the Judiciary, and the Law Society of Kenya (LSK).
Other members include Joyce Majiwa, SC, Ahmednasir Abdullahi, SC, Catherine Ochanda representing the Attorney General, LSK President Faith Odhiambo, Supreme Court Judge William Ouko, Court of Appeal Judge Gatembu Kairu, High Court Judge Nduma Mathews Nderi, and LSK representatives Chrispine Maondo and Wanjiru Ngige.
“Following a rigorous evaluation in line with the law and established professional criteria, successful candidates were identified based on their distinguished legal practice, integrity, and contribution to the development of jurisprudence in Kenya,” the Committee said in a statement.
The rank of Senior Counsel, also known as “Silk,” represents the highest professional recognition awarded to advocates in Kenya, reserved for those who have demonstrated exceptional legal expertise and professional excellence.
