Women in Technology and Innovation Africa (WITIA) has taken a major step toward bridging the digital divide in primary education with the groundbreaking of a new Smart Library at Mbukoni Primary School.
The initiative, WITIA’s second after the successful launch at Nkaimunya Primary in December 2025, aims to create a state-of-the-art digital learning hub for pupils and teachers, enhancing access to educational resources and digital literacy skills.
The Smart Library will feature a purpose-built, secure learning space, complete with computer stations, internet-enabled access to curated educational content, and modern furnishings. Beyond the infrastructure, the project includes teacher training programs, after-school and holiday digital clubs for pupils and community members, and local partnerships to ensure long-term sustainability.
A key highlight of the initiative is five scholarships upto university level for top five performing girls.
WITIA announced that the girls will receive full sponsorship up to university level, promoting both educational excellence and gender equity.
Speaking at the ceremony, Eunice Pohlmann, WITIA founder and chair, emphasized the organisation’s commitment to equal access to technology. “Our vision is simple — every child should be able to learn with the tools the 21st century demands. This smart library will open doors, ignite curiosity and prepare Mbukoni’s children for the road ahead,” she said.
Dr. Bella Namango, advisory board member, highlighted the importance of collaboration: “When communities, schools, and civil society come together, we create centres of opportunity. This project will serve as a model for scalable, sustainable digital learning across the county.”
Wesa Sitati, WITIA Programs Manager, addressed pupils directly, inspiring them to embrace digital learning: “You are on the road to success — and to be worthy of that road, you must face the right direction. The right direction is digital. Learn boldly, help one another, and use these tools to build your future.”
The School Board of Management and the County Director of Education welcomed the investment, pledging to ensure the facility benefits every child and reinforces county efforts to enhance learning outcomes and digital skills in primary schools.
WITIA will oversee the maintenance and governance of the library, ensuring it remains functional and relevant, while running ongoing teacher training and community outreach programs.
The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by school leadership, WITIA staff, county education officials, local leaders, pupils, and community members, marking a significant milestone in the county’s journey toward digital inclusion in education.
