Controversial preacher Eliud Wekesa Simiyu alias Yesu wa Tongaren has been freed by a Bungoma court after being detained for four days.

In a ruling on Tuesday, Judge Tom Mark Orlando said that the prosecution did not provide sufficient evidence before the court to charge Yesu wa Tongaren.

He further ordered police not to interfere with his activities in Tongaren.

The prosecution had requested for the controversial preacher to be detained, to allow investigations into his religious sect, which they said has questionable teachings.

During this time, the police wanted to comb through Yesu wa Tongaren's home, which they said is believed to be a crime scene, his church and also have the preacher undergo a mental assessment.

The self-proclaimed ‘Jesus’ has welcomed the court’s ruling, with his lawyers asking government to stop harassing religious leaders as everyone is free to worship according to article 32 of the constitution.

Lawyers George Wajackoyah and Simiyu Wamalwa were among the accused’s counsel.
