Boda boda operators in Murang’a County are up in arms over plans to implement a Bill that tightens regulations around the sector.

Among the regulations outlined in the Public Transport (Motorcycle Regulation) Bill 2023 is an introduction of stricter guidelines for the registration, operation, and management of boda boda services at the county level.

The proposed bill, sponsored by Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale, includes several provisions, among them, riders being prohibited from ferrying more than one passenger and those who break the rule subject to hefty fines.

Additionally, the proposed law forbids riders from transporting a pillion passenger alongside any load exceeding 50 kilograms, these restrictions sparking anger among the riders, who claim that their livelihoods are being put at risk.

Speaking at a meeting convened by operators in Kangema, the group said that the regulations would limit their operations, making it unprofitable.
