The bout, scheduled for eight rounds in the women’s Super-Featherweight division, is part of a stacked 10-fight card organized by promoter Maurice Odera under the UFS BXNG banner, billed as a thrilling “night of long knives.”
This encounter marks the third meeting between Zarika and Machela, rekindling a rivalry that has previously tilted heavily in favor of the Kenyan fighter. Zarika secured knockout victories in their first two meetings in 2010 and 2017, both held in Nairobi, and she has made her intentions clear ahead of the trilogy bout.
“First of all, I want to thank my sponsors for enabling me to return to the ring after a brief lull. Their support has made this match happen, including the other five title fights that will be contested on the night. I firmly believe that with the help of Odera, the UFS BXNG stable and my sponsors, I will be able to spring back to reclaim my WBC title, as this is my main target this season,” said Zarika.
The experienced pugilist heads into the fight with an impressive professional record of 51 bouts, including 35 wins (18 by knockout), 14 losses, and two draws. She credits her current form to an intensive three-month training camp at Ultra Fit Gym in Nairobi.
“I have been training for this bout under two coaches, Odera and Jamil Zaffa, for the last three months. We have sharpened all departments, from cardio to sparring, to strength and conditioning, among others. We have worked on my technical and tactical abilities to ensure I’m lethal in all directions as we focus on this fixture,” Zarika explained.
Despite her past dominance over Machela, Zarika is not taking anything for granted. She revealed that she has studied her opponent’s recent performances and believes she has the right strategy to neutralize the Tanzanian’s strengths.
Machela heads into the contest with a record of 26 fights, registering nine wins (six by knockout), 16 losses, and one draw. Zarika remains confident she can once again outclass her rival and move closer to reclaiming world honours.
“I want to fight the current WBC title holder, Ellie Scotney of Britain, who is also the unified owner of the WBO and the IBF belts,” Zarika added, underlining her ambition to return to the global stage.
The Nairobi fight night will feature several other high-profile bouts. The main event will see John Juma take on Tanzania’s Charles Chilala for the WBA Africa Gold Super Lightweight title over 10 rounds.
Other title fights on the card include Javan Buyu versus Athuman Nassoro for the PST Lightweight title, Rael Asubwe facing Leila Yazidu in the PST women’s Super-Featherweight category, Richard Okoth battling David Oluoch for the National Welterweight title, and Michael Oduor squaring off against Stanley Mukholo for the National Super-Welterweight crown.
The undercard will also showcase emerging talents, with bouts featuring Abdirahim Bashir against Victor Komen, Alice Waiyego versus Stacy Odindo, Stephen Kimani taking on Duncan Otieno, and James Mugeni facing Samuel Muendo.
With a mix of seasoned fighters and rising stars, the event promises an electrifying night of boxing action, with Zarika’s comeback firmly in the spotlight.
