CS Rotich under pressure to resign as Mudavadi says Kenya’s image tainted

The absence of a Cabinet Secretary or Principal Secretary at Treasury could spell trouble for the government, according to former Finance Minister Musalia Mudavadi.

He said this is because the charges levelled against CS Henry Rotich and his deputy Kamau Thugge have dented Kenya’s image internationally and could worsen relations if the two stay in office.

“Treasury is a very hot seat….as it stands things have changed, this is not the error where one could just blame the in discrepancies on the person above them. Essentially they are responsible for every thing to do with money in the government,” Mudavadi told Citizen TV.

According to Mudavadi, the vacuum left at Treasury should be plugged as soon as possible since the government in its entirety cannot function without the services of a Treasury CS who is the signatory to all government financing.

“The president served as the Finace Minister at one point, he understands the importance of this post in government,” Mudavadi added.

The former Finance Minister further stated that one does not have to be a financial or accounting expert to be entrusted with the treasury office.

He asserted that the President can appoint any Cabinet Secretary in acting capacity to hold forte.

“You don’t need to be a technocrat to fill the position as the president can appoint a substantive minister to hold the office in acting capacity,” Mudavadi said.

He further urged Rotich to ‘do the honourable thing’ and resign from office.

Mudavadi reiterated that should he continue to serve under his post with the allegations handing over his head, it will paint the government in bad light.
