Irrigation Principal Secretary Ephantus Kimotho emphasized that irrigation is a critical intervention in addressing climate change and achieving food security.
He cited the ongoing irrigation investments in Meru County valued at approximately Ksh.750 million, in which he expressed confidence that they will significantly boost agricultural productivity and livelihoods.
PS Kimotho said that the projects, covering about 2,581 acres, will benefit over 5,381 households
In line with this year’s theme, Water and Gender, the PS noted that women and girls continue to bear the greatest burden of water insecurity, yet they remain central to agriculture, contributing up to 70% of labour.
"Expanding access to irrigation is therefore key to unlocking productivity, reducing poverty, and promoting equity," he stated.
He therefore called on all stakeholders to take action towards water security and sustainability by conserving water towers, protecting catchments and forests, and promoting inclusive access to irrigation, particularly for women and youth to secure a sustainable future.
PS Kimotho accompanied Water and Irrigation Cabinet Secretary Eng. Eric Mugaa who noted that the government is keen on implementing programs to improve water, sanitation, and irrigation, including expanding access to clean water and increasing water storage.
He was flanked by Public Service CS Geoffrey Ruku, Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura, Deputy Head of Public Service Amos Gachecha, and other Principal Secretaries.
