KenGen to set up 30 electric vehicle charging stations
Electricity
generating company KenGen is set to establish 30 electric vehicle (EVs)
charging stations in 2023.
The
roll-out is set to be part of the firm’s investments in diversifying its
revenues to cover the e-mobility sector.
As
a start, KenGen has unveiled its first four electric vehicles which will be
primarily used for data collection and policy development ahead of the project’s
expansion next year.
“The
four acquired EVs will give the company first-hand experience and data on
electric vehicles,” said KenGen Acting Managing Director Abraham Serem.
“The
EV revolution is here with us. Countries around the world are racing to phase
out gasoline and petrol cars.”
The
roll-out of the charging stations and the data tracking EVs is expected to
guide KenGen’s own transition to convert its fleet from petroleum-powered motor
vehicles.
Presently,
KenGen has two EV charging stations in Nairobi and Naivasha and plans for three
more similar stations in the Counties of Murang’a, Embu and Kisumu.
KenGen has been diversifying its business away from electricity generation including consultancy on geothermal drilling services in Ethiopia and Djibouti.
