The Kenya Railways Corporation has announced new train fares for passengers plying the Nairobi- Kisumu train service.

Passengers travelling on the economy class coaches will pay Ksh.50 from Nairobi to Kikuyu; Ksh.100 from Nairobi to Limuru; Ksh.200 from Nairobi to Naivasha; and Ksh.300 from Nairobi to Nakuru.

The new schedule will also allow travelers to alight and board along the corridor with passengers making stopovers at Kibera, Kikuyu, Naivasha, Nakuru, Njoro, Elburgon and Turi, Molo, Mau Summit, Londiani and Kedowa.

They will also be able to board and alight at Kipkelion, Tunnel, Fort Ternan, Koru, Muhoroni, Chemelil, Kibigori, Miwani and Kibos.

Those traveling on second class coaches will pay Ksh.400 from Nairobi to Londiani; Ksh.500 from Nairobi to Kipkelion; and Ksh.600 from the city to Kisumu.

“Passengers on the route will also pay for first-class seats Ksh.200 from Nairobi to Kikuyu, Ksh.300 from Nairobi to Limuru and Ksh.600 from Nairobi to Naivasha,” said the corporation.

They will also pay first-class coaches Ksh.800 from Nairobi to Nakuru; Ksh.1,300 from Nairobi to Londiani; Ksh.177 from Nairobi to Kipkelion, and Ksh.2,000 from Nairobi to Kisumu.

The new passenger fares along the Nairobi-Kisumu route come barely a few days after the corporation shifted to ferrying passengers on the route at night citing low passenger demand during the day.

“We listened to our customers and the general public and decided to make the change to meet their travel needs. The Kisumu train will now make the journey during the night,” said Kenya Railways Managing Director Philip Mainga.

The night train will depart Nairobi Central Station at 6:30pm every Friday to arrive in Kisumu at 6:30am. The return trip will be every Sunday, with the train departing the Kisumu Station at 6:30pm to arrive in Nairobi at 6:35am.
