Kisumu sugarcane farmers reject new prices

Sugarcane farmers in Kisumu are now seeking intervention from the courts to revoke the new prices announced by the Agriculture and Food Authority last week on Monday.

In the petition filed under the certificate of urgency at the Kisumu High Court, farmer Charles Atiang indicated that the move was unilateral and did not factor in public participation from sugarcane farmers and millers.

The circular indicated a 13% drop of sugarcane per tonne, where farmers were directed to sell their produce at Ksh.5,100 per tonne, down from Ksh.5,900.

The petition also seeks the revocation of a gazette notice issued by Treasury Cabinet Secretary Prof. Njuguna Ndung'u, extending the sugar importation window by 9 weeks to close on June 30, 2024.
