KQ signs code share deal with Jambojet

Kenya Airways (KQ) has signed a code share agreement with its low cost subsidiary Jambojet as it seeks to increase efficiency for its connecting passengers into the domestic routes.

Through the deal, KQ will assign its designated code on JamboJet flights to Malindi, Lamu, Ukunda and Eldoret freeing up the airline to concentrate on sourcing passengers for the Momabsa and Kisumu routes.

The move is part of a fleet optimization plan by the national carrier to enhance efficiency.

Low cost carrier Jambojet is seen as a major beneficiary of the move as it will increase its flights to 17 a week to ferry the higher number of passengers.

Kenya Airways chief executive officer Mbuvi Ngunze said the move would allow the carrier to offer seamless connectivity for its international passengers.

“Jambojet continues to be one of our key revenue generators and thus we will constantly work on strategic linkages to grow our domestic market. The codeshare strategy helps to strengthen both Kenya Airways and Jambojet, allowing for further growth in the region,” Mr Ngunze said explaining the decision.

He said in the two years of operation, the no-frills low-cost airline had achieved impressive business growth slowly building its case for expansion.

JamboJet had sought a license from the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority for international flights but was turned down.

The move to code share with Kenya Airways is expected to enable the airline build the necessary capacity to handle international flights a part of the set out conditions.

“This will bring about a greater flow of both local and international travelers, and boost the number of tourists to the Coastal cities,” Jambojet chief executive officer Willem Hondius said.

Jambojet currently operates seven routes including Mombasa and Kisumu.
