Telco giant Safaricom has announced new changes in its Executive leadership just days after lawyer Adil Arshed Khawaja took over as Chair of the Board.

In a statement, the telco says that it has appointed Esther Masese Waititu as its Chief Financial Officer.

Masese, who will be reporting to the CEO, replaces Boniface Mungania who had been holding the position in an acting capacity from mid last year.

Mungania, on his part, has been appointed Director of Public Sector Digital Transformation, which is tasked with developing partnerships in the public space.

Meanwhile, Zizwe Awour Vundla has been appointed to serve as the Director of Brand and Marketing for the telco.

Lawyer Khawaja was on Thursday last week elected the telco’s new Board Chairman following the resignation of his predecessor John Ngumi early this year.

His entry, coming on the back of a new government’s installation, brought forth reports that Safaricom CEO Peter Ndegwa was likely on his way out.

However, speaking in an interview with Citizen TV, Mr. Ndegwa said that, over the past three years of his service, he has enjoyed a fairly good run and will continue to spearhead the telco’s operations until otherwise decided by the Board.

“From where I stand, the decisions about my role are usually for the Board, and now that we have a new Chairman I’m sure it is a question that can be asked both to the Board and the Chairman,” he stated on January 26, 2023.

“What I do know is that I’ve had a vey successful three years; I came in at a time when this country was faced with Covid, we’re a company that has served the country, kept the country connected, and now we’re converting ourselves into a purpose-led technology company. I plan to continue playing the role that I’ve played for the future.
