Safaricom reverses post-paid subscription price hikes
Leading
telecommunications operator Safaricom has reversed the pricing of post-pay
subscriptions as it eyes growth in the number of its customers on the service.
The
reversal relates to increased exercise duty on airtime and telephone services
from 15 to 20 per cent which had been implemented in July last year.
Subsequently,
Safaricom post-paid subscription costs will fall by a mean of 4.8 per cent across
the board with the lowest monthly plan now going for Ksh.1000 from Ksh.1050
previously.
“Our
commitment to our customers is to offer greater value and deliver a great
experience with our products and services,” said Safaricom Plc CEO Peter
Ndegwa.
At
the same time, the operator has consolidated its monthly subscriptions into a
single service as it seeks to drive convenience for its post-paid customers.
“By
consolidating our monthly plans, we seek to simplify our product offering while
enabling our customers to enjoy a digital lifestyle in an affordable manner,”
Mr Ndegwa added.
Safaricom
says it has also activated minutes or internet-only post-paid subscriptions under
the new service dubbed Go Monthly.
Further,
the operator says it plans to introduce a device bundling option that will enable post-paid customers to acquire 4G and 5G smartphones via a monthly
repayment plan inclusive of data, voice and SMS bundles.
According
to the latest data from the Communication Authority of Kenya (CA), Safaricom
has 1.2 million post-paid mobile (SIM) subscriptions as of the end of
September.
