Safaricom has
announced it has surpassed 50 million customers on its mobile network in Kenya,
marking a major milestone ahead of its 25th anniversary in October 2025.
The telco attributed
the achievement to increased customer engagement initiatives rolled out over
the past year, including campaigns such as Sambaza Furaha and the M-PESA Sokoni
marketplace.
“This milestone
reflects the deep connection we have built with Kenyans over the past two and a
half decades,” said Group CEO Peter Ndegwa in a statement on Thursday.
“We recommit ourselves
to always being a force for good and creating what’s next for our customers.”
Founded in 2000 with
just 17,000 customers, Safaricom has grown to become the country’s largest
telecommunications provider.
The company also
recently hit 10 million customers in Ethiopia, where it entered in 2022 and has
been expanding its regional footprint.
Over the years,
Safaricom has invested in digital infrastructure and introduced key innovations
such as M-PESA, which now operates as a digital financial ecosystem.
The company has also
played a role in expanding internet connectivity through its 3G, 4G, and 5G
networks.
