Savannah Cement in Sh5 billion Expansion Drive

Savannah Cement has lined up a 5 billion shillings in expansion investment with an eye on regional growth.

The cement maker that is Kenya’s fourth largest manufacturer by market share will install a second grinding plant at Kitengela , close to its Athi-River plant and double it’s annual output to 1.2 million tonnes per year.

Managing Director Ronald Ndegwa, says the plans which coincide with the firm’s 7th anniversary will enable the firm tap into the government’s affordable housing plan while targeting presence in the region. The plant is also strategically placed to serve the greater Nairobi which accounts for 50% of Kenya’s cement consumption.

Savannah Cement’s regional entry is expected to propel exports which have been on the decline in recent years.

According to 2019 quarter one data from the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics, cement exports fell in value to just 11 million shillings from a high of 877 million shillings at the start of 2017 to represent a nearly 90 percent plunge to keep with receding cement manufacturing industry in the country.

The state of the art plant which is set to be completed by year end will ensure a dust free manufacturing system and will also serve to enhance environmental conservation.

Established in 2012, Savannah Cement, a home grown company has in the seven years, cemented its growth in the local and regional market.

Savannah was the first local cement company to market Rapid strength development cement (32.R and 42.5R) and also produces the 42.5N cement type. The specially formulated “R” cement gains strength rapidly ahead of the normal strength development curve. Additionally, the   plant features a 1200 tonnes-per-day pozzolana drier to ensure moisture-free mill feed.
