Uhuru sets up team to handle trade disputes within EAC region

President Uhuru Kenyatta has set up a sub-committee that will be charged with handling trade disputes within the East African Community regional block.

The sub-committee comprises of cabinet secretaries from various ministries including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Industry, the National Treasury and the Interior Ministry.

According to East Africa Affairs Cabinet Secretary Adan Mohammed, the committee which met 10 days ago for the first time has already resolved issues to do with the export of textiles, motor vehicles and leather.

“The meeting we had 10 days ago addressed issues to do with motor vehicle exports to Burundi and also issues to do with the exports of textile and leather,” said CS Mohammed.

The sub-committee has also forwarded complains to the EAC secretariat on the 25% tax subjected on sugar confectioneries from Kenya.

Tanzania rejected certificates of origin issued by the Kenya Revenue Authority and opted to levy 25% import duty on the products.

“These concerns have been forwarded to the EAC secretariat and we are looking to resolve these issues as soon as possible,” said the CS.
