Zuku takes on M-Kopa with solar TVs

Internet and pay TV service provider Zuku has partnered with UK based Azuri Technologies to supply solar powered televisions to five million homes not connected to the national grid.

The project is aimed at offering alternative access to electricity while offering users the chance to access television programming.

Through the partnership, users will get a 24 inch television, satellite dish and Zuku Smart+ entertainment with 48 TV and 21 radio channels.

Customers will make daily payments of Sh149 via mobile money top ups daily for a period of two years to fully own the equipment.

The system also comes with a powerful solar home system providing four bright home lights, mobile phone charging and a rechargeable portable radio.

Zuku Satellite TV Chief Executive Officer Jay Chudasama said the innovative approach, will not only offer a revolutionary way to reach out to over 5 million homes without electricity, but also contribute greatly towards deepening the television penetration in the country in general.

“This is a very exciting opportunity we are giving our customers and viewers to have more choices and enjoy the experience to watch over 40 Zuku TV channels that offers high-quality and affordable family entertainment with emphasis on the local content,” Mr Chudasama said.

The service will be initially rolled out in Central Kenya before being taken across the country.

With the introduction of the TV solar system, Zuku is taking on solar energy provider M-Kopa which rolled out a similar service In February.

M-Kopa customers pay a deposit of Sh7,999 and daily deposits of Sh125.

Azuri Technologies Chief Executive Officer Simon Bransfield-Garth said the system would afford off-grid consumers the chance to remain informed and entertained while also offering access to electricity.

“Solar power has made huge strides. Just a few years ago, a small solar light was new technology. Today we are providing a TV and service provision that would not look out of place in any major city in the world,” Mr Bransfield-Garth said.
