#FBF: The real reason why Nameless sang ‘Juju’

When talking about legendary musicians like Wyre, Nazizi, Amani, Wahu Kagwi, one would be remise not to mention David ‘Nameless’ Mathenge.

With chart-topping tracks such as Ninanoki, Juju, and Boomba – Nameless has made a name for himself in Kenya’s music industry.

While most of his songs have done exceeding well, Juju put him on the continental map, even earning him a Channel O nomination in 2006.

Speaking exclusively to Citizen Digital, Nameless explained the concept behind the video saying: “When working on Juju, I wanted to make something that was different from the norm. However, it had to be something that attracts people. It is a love song that involves an aspect of witchcraft.”

The hit song tells the story of a man who is so enchanted by a woman that he suspects he’s been given a love potion.

“Ninamshuku huyo dame muspuu, amenipa juju, namuota kila siku. Nikimuona nashikwa na kifafa…”

The video, which produced in collaboration with Mr. Lenny, achieved the goal – with the witchcraft theme attracting significant attention from Kenya’s largely religious public.

In retrospect, Nameless considers Juju one of his best tracks to date – especially since it still gets airplay nearly 10 years since it was released.
