Here are five fantasy TV series you should watch this August

If you're like me, chances are that for the past four years you've patiently been waiting for a fantasy TV series that will knock Game of Thrones (GoT) off its perch.
I will not get into how underwhelming the final season of GoT was but you will have to take my word for it that there are quite a number of exceptional fantasy series out there that don't necessarily take place in the fictitious medieval continent of Westeros.
From the GoT spin-off 'House of the Dragon,' to DC's live action adaptation of the 'Sandman' graphic novel, a lineup of new and returning fantasy series, that will emerge you in a world of magic, myths and adventure, are set to hit streaming platforms in August.
So if you are into fantasy TV shows, you better clear your weekend schedules next month in anticipation of the new releases. Here are five fresh and continuing series you should definitely look out for next month.
'The Sandman' Season 1: (Drops August 5, 2022)
I highly recommend the first entry on the list which is the live action adaptation of Neil Gaiman's series of dark graphic novels, of the same name, published by DC Comics.
The show will revolve around the titular character the Sandman or Morpheus (played by Tom Sturridge) who is the physical manifestation of sleep and dreams.
It will follow the king of dreams' journey a century after he escapes human captivity as he sets out to restore his powers and order to his kingdom of the Dreaming where nightmares and terrifying creatures of the dream world are running amok and infiltrating human minds without orders from the Sandman.
'Locke and Key' Season 3: (Returns on August 9)
The third installment of the now cult classic series will continue the story of the Locke siblings and their mother after they moved into their ancestral home, Keyhouse, following the unexpected death of their patriarch.
In the first season, the family found out that there is more than meets the eye in regards to Keyhouse after they discovered magic keys, conveniently hidden in the house, that may be connected to their father's death.
The fact that a demon is also after the keys doesn't make things any easier for the Locke family. The first and second season made for great watches but the new season will resume right after the cliffhanger finale of season 2 that left audiences with more questions than answers.
'I am Groot' Season 1: (Premieres on August 10)
Not to leave out younger audiences, I have also included one of the latest additions to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) in the form of the web series 'I am Groot.'
The beloved tree-like character warmed himself into the hearts of audiences after appearing in MCU's 'Guardians of the Galaxy' franchise so much so that he earned his own spin-off series.
The animated show will follow Groot (who has yet to fully grow into his tree-like adult form following the events of the first 'Guardians of the Galaxy' movie) as he gets into adventures that will be independent from those of Star Lord and the Guardians of the Galaxy gang.
Vin Diesel will return to voice Groot.

Another entry in the MCU, She Hulk will tell the story of Jennifer Walters, played by Tatiana Maslany, who happens to be the cousin of fictitious character Bruce Banner popularly known by Marvel fans all over the world as The Hulk.
Walters, who is a member of the superhuman law division, becomes a meta-human after coming into contact with her cousin's blood which allows her to transform into a female version of the Hulk.
The show will follow her journey as she juggles work as an attorney and as a novice crime fighter.
'House of the Dragon' Season 1 (Drops on August 21)

The reign of House Targaryen is set to officially begin in August with the House of the Dragon, which is a prequel to popular fantasy series GoT. Based on George R.R. Martin’s 'Fire & Blood,' book series the show is set 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones and it tells the story of House Targaryen.
The show will specifically focus on an historical civil war in Westeros' history between siblings Aegon II and Rhaenyra over the iron throne after the death of their father Viserys I.
