Kenyan musician-turned-politician Charles
‘Jaguar’ Kanyi has revealed that he was once deported from the United States.
Speaking on Radio Citizen's Mambo Mseto show, Jaguar narrated that, as an upcoming musician
back in the day, he got an invite from a friend to perform in Detroit, U.S.
He said that upon arriving at an airport in
the U.S, security queried him about not having an ATM card for his financial
transactions, ultimately sending him back to Kenya.
“Kufika Detroit nilikuwa na kiherehere
nilikuwa nadhani mimi ni msanii mkubwa sana kwa sababu nilikuwa nimepata invite
kutoka kwa rafiki yangu kwa sababu alikuwa anaskia mimi huimba, kufika kule ata
sikuwa na ATM card yenye ina visa,” said the Starehe legislator.
“Sasa ma-askari wa kule wakaniuliza sema
ukose mtu kwenye airport utatumia pesa gani na wakanirudisha mpaka Kenya.”
However, the legislator did not give up and
went back to the embassy to get the proper documentation and everything he
needed to go back to the U.S for his proper star moment.
“Nilirudi kwa embassy sababu sikuloose
hope,” he stated.
In the U.S, the former entertainer realized
that people did not know of him and hence started doing some manual labor to
survive.
According to Jaguar, he converted the sore
experience to his advantage resulting to him getting his first million which he
then used to start a taxi business in Kenya and later a garage company.
“Kufika pale nikapata watu hawanijui,
nilifanya kazi mingi kwa dollar store, kufagia, nilikuwa nafanya kazi eighteen
hours sababu lazima ushikanishe ndio upate ile pesa… niliweza kusave na
ivo ndio nilitengeneza my first million,” he recalled.
‘’Nilinunua taxi tatu, zilikuwa zinaitwa Jagz
cabs, baadaye nikafungua garage.”
The former entertainer is well-known for his
business savvy nature even before joining politics with several properties to
his name.
Jaguar further revealed that he plans to
defend his Starehe MP seat in the upcoming August general elections.
