Kim Kardashian to rename ‘Kimono’ clothing line following Japanese backlash

Kim Kardashian West has now announced that she will rename her latest clothing line which drew sharp criticism and backlash on social media.

The socialite-turned-businesswoman recently launched a clothing line dubbed ‘Kimono’ which sparked anger from a section of Japanese social media users who termed the move as disrepectful.

‘Kimono’ is generally a Japanese garment with cultural significance treasured by the community for generations.

The Asian community – under a hashtag aptly named #KimOhNo – took offence with Mrs. West using it for her clothing line reportedly inspired by her struggle to find the perfect undergarments.

The Mayor of Kyoto, Daisaku Kadokawa, wrote a letter to Mrs. West urging her to reconsider renaming the ‘Kimono’ line.

“Kimono is a traditional ethnic dress fostered in our rich nature and history with our predecessors’ tireless endeavours and studies, and it is a culture that has been cherished and passed down with care,” wrote the Mayor.

The ‘Keeping Up With The Kardashians’ reality show star, taking to social media, has since announced that she would change the name saying: “I am always listening, learning and growing – I so appreciate the passion and varied perspectives that people bring to me. When I announced the name of my shapewear line, I did so with the best intentions in mind.”

“My brands and products are built with inclusivity and diversity at their core and after careful thought and consideration, I will be launching my Solutionwear brand under a new name. I will be in touch soon. Thank you for your understanding and support always,” she added.

Kimono is my take on shapewear and solutions for women that actually work.
