Musician Ringtone weeps in court in assault case against Robert Alai
Gospel
singer Alex Apoko, alias Ringtone, on Thursday got emotional and wept in the
courtroom while narrating how Kileleshwa MCA aspirant Robert Alai allegedly assaulted
him last year.
Ringtone,
appearing at the Kibera Law Courts, seemingly struggled to hold back his tears
as he gave his version of the events, describing how Alai allegedly attacked
and harmed him on the road, according to viral videos.
The
controversial singer claimed the renowned blogger smashed his car windscreen
before striking and injuring him on the jaw.
“Hakunigonga
akiwa amenyamaza…alinigonga kwa jaw akisema ‘Ringtone nitakuua,’” he said in
his testimony.
Ringtone
likewise added that despite being the oppressed party, he still intervened to
save Alai from allegedly being lynched by a gathering of youth who were
irritated by his actions.
The
court cautioned the blogger-turned-politician, who boasts about 1.7 million
followers on Twitter, against commenting on the case online either directly or
through intermediaries.
Alai
was on July 23, 2021 arrested and detained at the Kilimani Police Station on
allegations of beating Ringtone with a wooden club.
The two
accused each other of obstruction in a scuffle that began on Loitoktok Road and
spread to Dennis Pritt and Likoni Roads.
Alai was accused
of hitting Ringtone’s car at a roundabout on Loitoktok road.
He
was on August 9 arraigned and charged with causing
grievous harm to Ringtone, as well as malicious damage of property.
The
court heard that Alai willfully and unlawfully damaged the driver’s window and
a side step of a the musician’s Range Rover vehicle; with the damage being
valued at Ksh.416,524.
He denied
the charges and was released on a cash bail of Ksh.300,000.
