Mark Zuckerberg opens up about wife’s miscarriages

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg has announced that he and his wife, Priscilla Chan, are expecting a baby girl.

In his announcement on Facebook, Zuckerberg opened up about the couple’s trouble while trying to conceive a child and their three miscarriages.

“We’ve been trying to have a child for a couple of years and have had three miscarriages along the way,” he wrote on his Facebook wall.

Zuckerberg explained how lonely it was to go through a miscarriage, saying that people tend to shy off from discussing such matters.

“You feel so hopeful when you learn you’re going to have a child. You start imagining who they’ll become and dreaming of hopes for their future. You start making plans, and then they’re gone. It’s a lonely experience,” said Zuckerberg, adding that most people avoid discussing miscarriages because they feel their problems will distance them.

The Internet billionaire intimated that miscarriages are extremely emotional and devastating to families, urging people to discuss them with friends and family so they don’t go through the difficult struggle alone.

“In today’s open and connected world, discussing these issues doesn’t distance us; it brings us together. It creates understanding and tolerance, and it gives us hope,” he said.

Zuckeberg said he was optimistic that by sharing their story, more couples would open up about their difficulties in conceiving, subsequently getting moral support from family and friends and also medical help from professionals.

“We hope that sharing our experience will give more people the same hope we felt and will help more people feel comfortable sharing their stories as well,” he said.
