#MondayMotivation: Here are 7 habits you need to develop to excel in your career

We are all products of our habits, whether good or bad. This is why Colin Powell, former United States National Security Advisor and an author once said “If you are going to achieve excellence in big things, you develop the habit in little matters. Excellence is not an exception, it is a prevailing attitude.”

According to a survey conducted by the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) around 7 million Kenyans are unemployed out of which, 1.4 million are desperately looking for work.

With that said, most people still feel the need to ‘coast’ through work and do the bare minimum when blessed with the ‘gift’ that is work in today’s world. Now this may not only cost you your job but may have a big impact on your performance and on all those with whom you interact.

Since habits are a choice, we are here to help you make great choices and help you cultivate the good habits for the greater good!

1.Punctuality: Punctuality is the duty of subjects and the politeness of Kings. If the royalties can afford to be punctual who are you not to? Be punctual or better yet early.

2. Productivity and taking initiative: Simply do not wait to be told what to do. Come up with ideas (self-starter) and ensure you get results for set goals!

3. Attention to detail: In as much as humans are to err, it is important to pay attention to the nitty-gritties of your work and make fewer mistakes.

4. Self-appearance: Ever heard of the saying ‘you attract what you are?’ Well if you want to make money /people to take you seriously you might as well start grooming, mind your wardrobe and just look the part.

5. Team-player: Teamwork is the fuel that allows common people attain uncommon results. Brilliant minds like Steve Jobs have been seen to orchestrate this and proved to work. Be selfless, ready to share and acquire ideas from people you work with.

6. Responsibility: Own it! Every right implies responsibility so it is important to know what you are supposed to do, when to do it and how to do it.

7. Etiquette: Your mannerisms say a lot about the kind of person you are. With freedom being championed in every aspect of life ‘knowing your place’ comes quite in handy. Know how to approach people, present situations and above all relate with your workmates.

Success means different things to different people, whatever it is…acquiring these good traits and habits will get you closer to your goal!
