120yr-old woman turns away Huduma Namba clerks in Kericho

Drama unfolded at Motobo village in the outskirts of Kericho town after a 120-year-old woman turned away the Huduma Namba registration clerks.

The centenarian identified as Sarah Maina rejected the intentions of the clerks saying it was no longer of help to her.

Mrs Maina took a swipe at the government saying it had failed to assist her in restoring her eyesight and limbing legs and wondered why she was now being forced to register for the number.

She said the same government had failed to enjoin her in the old women and men cash transfer system and her pleas fell on deaf ears.

Attempts by the registration clerks to convince her to be registered were futile as the centenarian asked her grandchildren who were taking care of her to take her back inside her hut.

However, Motobo sub location assistant chief Scandy Korir said she would try to intervene and have the woman register later.

Earlier in the day, former President Daniel arap Moi registered for his Huduma Namba at his home at Kabarnet Gardens, Nairobi.

ICT Cabinet Secretary Joe Mucheru witnessed the registration of the 94-year-old former Head of State.

The Law Society of Kenya on Friday released a statement saying registration for Huduma Namba is not mandatory and the government should not deny services to unregistered Kenyans.

According to LSK, the case is still in court and it is illegal to set a deadline which the government had set as Saturday, May 18.
