15-year sentence for American man who sexually abused girls at orphanage in Kenya

An American man has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for sexually abusing four underage girls at a children’s home he and his wife had set up in Kenya’s Bomet County.

61-year-old Gregory Dow from Lancaster in Philadelphia was sentenced after the pleaded guilty to four counts of engaging in illicit sexual conduct a minor between 2013 and 2017 while running Dow Family Children’s Home which he established in 2008.

In an announcement made on Thursday by acting United States Attorney Jennifer Arbittier Williams, Dow was also ordered to pay Ksh.1.7 million in restitution for sexually abusing four minors at the orphanage.

Dow, who arrived in Kenya in 2008, fled the country together with his wife in 2017 to avoid arrest and prosecution after he was  caught defiling one of the girls at the orphanage.

He had established the Children’s Home under the guise of Christianity, with financial support from Churches and Faith-based organizations from the U.S.

A tipster contacted the Lancaster County prosecutors’ office in 2019 setting the stage for an investigation that produced the new charges that he violated a U.S. law against sexual contact with minors in foreign countries.

Dow is reported to have been implanting birth control devices on some the girls to prevent them from getting pregnant in the course of the sexual abuse
