Seventeen Chiefs have been interdicted in Central Kenya due to breach of government regulations and abetting the sale of illicit brews.
According to Central Regional Commissioner Wilson Njenga, some of the Chiefs had failed to perform their duties.
Three of the Chiefs are from Nyeri Central, four from Kiambu, seven from Nyandarua and another four from Murang’a.
Njenga made the announcement as over 900 litres of illicit brew were destroyed on Saturday at Chaka area in Nyeri Central where over 345 people were arrested.
“We have began cleaning our own house to ensure that those people we have are people who are committed to this task of ridding society of this menace of illicit alcohol and drugs,” said Njenga.
“This week we have interdicted Chiefs and assistant chiefs across the region for not joining the crackdown. Some of them engaging on consumption of this alcohol we are fighting.”
