24.5 million Kenyans registered to political parties by March 26, Registrar Nderitu says

At the end of the March 26th deadline, more than 24 million Kenyans had registered with political parties. 

This is according to records released by the office of the registrar of political parties that show 82 political parties have returned their registers.

"We have  24,571,400 registered members in political parties in the country.In the list 15M are male while 8.6 M are female. 82 political parties have submitted their list,"said registra of political parties Ann Nderitu. 

Nderitu said all the 82 political parties presented their register of registered members  on time for certification. 

Nderitu says her office will take 7 days to conclude the certification process before presenting the list to Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission in readiness for nominations. 

"The deadline for submission of certified party membership register to IEBC is 9th April,"she said.

According to the political parties act, only members of political parties will be allowed to participate in party nominations scheduled for between 12th to 22nd April. 

"Parties can continue registering members, but they will not in party actives geared for August 9th general elections, if they didn't beat the March 26th deadline" said Nderitu.

According to Nderitu as at 28th March,912 independent candidates had manually applied for  clearance  with 650 application having so far been processed.
