26 KCSE candidates arrested in Nairobi over suspected exam cheating

Police have arrested 26 students in Nairobi over suspected cheating in the ongoing Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations.

The students were arrested at St. Teresa Boys Primary School where 154 private candidates are sitting their 2019 KCSE examinations.

Starehe Sub-county Directorate of Criminal Investigations boss Martin Mbaya said police seized 35 mobile phones suspected to have been being used in exam cheating at the school.

“26 of the mobile phones have been identified with the owners and police are carrying out further investigations to establish the owners of the nine mobile phones seized at the examinations center,” said Mr. Mbaya.

According to the police boss, the officers administering the examinations discovered that the students were receiving answers, real time, from an unknown source during Chemistry Paper II examinations.

“Investigations will continue to establish the source of the communications with the candidates and those behind the racket,” Mbaya noted.

The 26 suspects are expected to be arraigned to face charges of examination malpractice.
