400 petty offenders pardoned to decongest prisons

Over 400 petty offenders are set to be released from prison and put under community service in a bid to decongest prisons in Nyanza region.
Kisii Probation Director Zachary Maroko said offenders who are serving short sentences and have shown behavioral change will be released so that they can finish the remaining term under non-custodial sentence.
Maroko said probation officers are visiting various prisons in the region among them Kisii, Migori, Homabay and Kilgoris to evaluate those who will be benefit from the programme.
He added that a report from members of the family and community will also be considered.
