41 workers at Pumwani Maternity Hospital test positive for COVID-19

Forty-one more workers at Pumwani Maternity Hospital have tested positive for coronavirus following testing of 290 staffers at the facility.

Ministry of Health Director General Dr. Patrick Amoth said the 41 staffers are asymptomatic and are undergoing medical care under home-based isolation.

Dr. Amoth noted that out of the 41 staff members who have tested positive at Pumwani hospital, two of them have since recovered.

“The remaining 39 are doing well. Nobody has gone to hospital for care and we are hopeful they will be able to pull through without developing any symptoms of COVID,” said Dr. Amoth.

A batch of 100 other workers at the maternity hospital are yet to undergo testing for the virus.

Dr. Amoth said the workers qualified for home-based isolation since they were not showing symptoms for COVID-19.

He, however, assured that delivery of services at the hospital will continue, noting that measures have been put in place to protect the health workers as well as members of public visiting the hospital.

Concerns on the outbreak of COVID-19 at Pumwani Hospital emerged over the weekend after Kenya National Union of Nurses Nairobi County Chair Boaz Onchari on Sunday said there were 15 nurses at the facility who had tested positive and were asymptomatic.
