50-man-gang attacks Nakuru’s Flamingo estate

Police in Nakuru have launched a manhunt for members of a 50-man gang believed to be part of the proscribed Mungiki sect who staged attacks on Wednesday night, injuring several residents of Flamingo estate.

The injured, two teenagers aged 16 and 17, were heading home at around 6PM when the machete-wielding gang pounced on them.

According to the victims identified as Kenneth Mukangare and Geoffrey Mungai, the gang did not ask for anything or steal any valuables, they just pounced on them and slashed them.

Led by the Head of Administration Police Operations in Nakuru Barnabas Kimutai, the officers managed to arrest two suspects and recovered a machete.

The suspects are being held at the Bondeni police station and are helping police with investigations.

Police have also heightened security patrols in Nakuru town and its environs after word went round that retaliatory attacks were being planned.

Preliminary investigations indicated that the gang originated from Rhonda Estate in Nakuru Town West Constituency and are suspected to be part of a group that circulated leaflets in the town warning of impending attacks by members of the Mungiki sect.

The latest attack comes just days after the Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet warned of the re-emergence of proscribed groups with Mungiki topping the list.

Last month, two suspected Mungiki members from Nakuru town were brutally murdered and their bodies dumped at Gakoe Forest in Kiambu County.
