Schools on Kitui-Tana border may not sit for KCPE, KCSE: lawmaker

Six schools in the volatile Kitui-Tana border risk not sitting for their national examinations: KCPE and KCSE.

According to Mwingi Central MP Gideon Mulyungi,  if adequate security is not beefed up on the bandit-prone border, the students will miss the exams.

“More than 200 candidates in Mwanzele, Kathungu, Ukasi, Sosoma, Iviani and Muuani may not sit for the upcoming national exams if Matiang’i does not make this matter urgent and deploy adequate security personnel to the affected schools,” he said.

On Tuesday, the lawmaker urged Interior CS Fred Matiangi to ensure that additional security is deployed to all schools at the epicentre of the banditry attacks.

He added that pupils have already abandoned their schools in fear of their safety.

The warning comes barely a day after one person was killed by Somali bandits alleged to be behind sporadic attacks in the area.

The KCSE and KCPE exams are slated to kick off next week.
