Police on Wednesday arrested eight students of Kisii High School in connection with a fire incident that destroyed the institution’s oldest dormitory on Tuesday night.

Kisii County Police Commander confirmed the arrests saying investigations were underway concerning the cause of the fire that razed down property belonging to 198 students.

The school has since been closed indefinitely.

Kisii County Deputy Governor Joash Maangi described the incident as unfortunate, further appealing to all institutions to mount CCTV cameras to aid in identifying suspects in such cases.

The deputy governor noted that the eight students, who are set to be arraigned in court on Thursday, were arrested after a review of CCTV footage at the school.

Maangi also urged the school management to organize psychological counseling for students to enable them resume normalcy, including preparation for national examinations.

Students who spoke to Citizen Digital said the arsonists might be students who were not well prepared for exams hence were out to disrupt their counterparts.

They said the situation in the school was normal and no suspicious elements were detected before the incident occurred.
